Why don’t we just be on the safe side  and save the planet anyway?

The presentation itself is a comment. I have no idea why we would care if the statements regarding climate change are overblown. P lan for the worst and hope for the best.

Because you give up a lot for it. All for the low hanging fruit.  Let's do the things that have a big impact for little cost. But with the extreme views come extreme sacrifices.

I read the whole article, still not sure what the thrust of it is. Use softer words?

The one bit at the end about encouraging dirty energy generation in developing nations to make them wealthier quicker is bullshit. Want to help elevate them out of poverty? Rather than encouraging them to burn more coal, GIVE THEM WEALTH. Pool tens of billions of dollars to build modern electrical grids with a combination of cleaner generation and renewables, and DON’T ASK FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN.

Greed is the biggest barrier.

Extremism in all forms is bad it leads to dangerous group think that leads to catastrophe. Just because you agree with the issue doesn’t make extremism okay.

At least liberal extremism is productive. We can’t be TOO environmentally friendly. It’s more than can be said about the other side.

I mean, I’m all for a clean environment, but North America isn’t a major polluter anymore. Get China, India, and the rest of the third world first class polluters to clean up their act b efore preaching to me.

Also, metals aside, recycling is an absolute scam that is worse for the environment than doing nothing at all . The bulk of the community has been completely duped into believing they’re making a positive difference, when in fact they’re causing more pollution both at home and abroad.

Don’t try to change my mind. You cannot.

Solid position, and one that I’ve taken for a while. But the more I read about what this really entails (from the extremist end), the scarier it looks. Think “massive reduction in standards of living for the developing world” as a starting point. We usually think of it more in terms of “Boo hoo, my neighbor can’t drive his F-350" but that’s a drop in the bucket.

One logical end to this is a sick utilitarian dystopia: MAYBE save 5 billion people by letting a couple billion die along the way. In other words, how can we (the first world) tell everyone that they don’t deserve to strive for the comforts and safety that we have?

I think the reality will be that we innovate our way out of this, all while reducing consumption. I don’t think anyone will tolerate watching babies starve in Africa because we’re limiting CO2.

I get the point the article is trying to make, but the issue here is that this so-called extremism does not exist in a vacuum. It is a response to the decades of people denying that climate change exists, not with scientific counter-arguments, but with sticking their fingers in their ears and saying “NUH UHH!”

So the people who listen to science end up getting shouty because they’re like, “THE SCIENCE IS RIGHT THERE! THIS IS A PROBLEM WE KNOW HOW TO SOLVE! WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO GET YOU TO PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND? ”

I don’t get this argument, it boils down to “why should I do better when they’re worse than me?”

As always, George Carlin has the best take.

And a quote from my my favorite earthiest:

“ One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.”

The US is still the second largest emitter of CO2. How is that not a major polluter? Not to mention that CO2 ’s effects on climate are largely cumulative, and the US has emitted more carbon in total by far than any other country,  including China. This is just a way to shirk responsibility

It seems no one wants to go  there anymore, they drive as far away as they can in opposite directions.

Climate change fanatics actually turned me into a denier/skeptic for a number of years — specifically because their agenda was so obviously socialistic, for lack of a better term.

That was years ago and I’m definitely not a denier. Oddly, the rhetoric seems to be even more extreme now, so I’m sure there are plenty of people today sitting where I was 10-15 years ago. Extremism doe sn ’t really help, it only reinforces the existing base.

IMHO, reasonable compromises and solutions help.

Not in the summer, though, it’s like a septic tank full of Germans.

Honestly, though, I appreciate Venice as a lightning rod for sea level rise , but it was always sort of a folly from the start. People make crazy choices when trying to escape their enemies.

I think that arguing that poor countries should get away with unacceptable practices because they’re poor is one of the stupidest mainstream ideas I’ve heard.

The whole point of globalization is that these poor countries can benefit from the tech that the rich ones already developed... so that they can leap-frog old tech and focus on catching up and developing modern tech with the rich nations.

“The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.” Says Thunberg in her new book, “Around 2030 we will be in a position to set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control that will lead to the end of our civilization as we know it.”

I thought the point of globalization was that rich countries could  shift their pollution and poor working conditions   to poor countries?

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > DipodomysDeserti
11/26/2019 at 17:53

Kinja'd!!!0

There’s an ugly part to globalization as well, perhaps I should’ve been more forthright about it. But my point stands, developing nations should be pushed into developing modern infrastructure, rather than allowed to pollute more. This would tangentially force abusive investors into being more environmentally conscious. As for the working conditions... that’s something that might be harder to regulate... but we should try to too.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > Spanfeller is a twat
11/26/2019 at 18:00

Kinja'd!!!0

There is no leverage whatsoever to push rich nations to help poor nations to pollute less. People in rich nations largely don’t care if the third world is polluted, and the people most affected by pollution in poor countries, poor people, have no voice. Shit, people in rich countries don’t even care if their own countries are polluted, as long as it stays in poor areas. You can push all you want, but there is no way to enact real change within the current system.
